Today, we had our second workshop with 6th graders at the Salk School of Science! We had the honor of conducting our introductory Climate Superheroes workshop with the other half of the 6th grade, and they were not only great listeners but also creative artists! Some superpowers they came up with included shooting seeds for trees out of their hands and reviving extinct species! We cannot wait to talk about sustainable fashion with them in March. Thanks to Rosanne, Salome, Hazel, and our newest member: Eva! 💚♻️💚

On Thursday, we made the journey to Gramercy Manhattan to visit the Salk School of Science and teach 70 kids! Once we arrived we split up between three classes and delivered presentations on the climate crisis, and the impact of human activities on different communities around the world. We learned about floods and droughts, and how extreme weather events affect people and animals. Also, we discussed AI and high demand of water for data centers. The students seemed especially excited about the alternative search engine Ecosia, that uses its profits to fund reforestation around the world! After the presentation, the students brainstormed different superheroes as well as real-life strategies to help tackle climate change! Overall it was a great day of creative planning and learning!

We gave a presentation to 26 7th and 8th graders at 75 Morton’s STEAM Group, focused on zoning in on specific parts of the world like Somalia, Bangladesh and Sudan that are impacted disproportionately by climate change and natural disasters. We talked about the meaning of the term “Global South” and how the devastating impacts of climate disasters often fall on the communities that lack the infrastructure and resources needed to handle them. We then discussed important changes we can all make in our daily lives to become more climate-aware, and ended with a game of climate jeopardy to test their knowledge!!

When visiting 75 Morton, we delved into teaching older kids about more detailed harmful activities that our world ‘depends on’. When discussing this we connected these events with types of waste; whether it was energy, natural resources, or materials. After going through a presentation about ways to prevent being wasteful, we made posters for the classroom to remind us of ways to do so!

We had our first workshop with Sixth Street Community Center! We discussed the consequences of global warming like floods, droughts, extreme weather events and human/animal migrations. Then, we went over some key ways that the kids can tackle the crisis and begin to lead more environmentally conscious lives. We ended with a poster-making activity, where the kids made signs to hang up around their center with climate-friendly reminders like “turn off the lights!” or informational diagrams on topics like composting.

We had our second workshop with Sixth Street Community Center. We started with a presentation on the greenhouse effect, discussing how it is a natural process that is gradually intensifying through human activities and the burning of fossil fuels. We walked them through the three main greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor) and then did some multiple choice questions to check their understanding! Next, our volunteers traced a diagram of the greenhouse effect onto a big sheet of paper. We let the kids color it in, and then walked them through each step and labeled it together! This allowed them to visualize how the greenhouse effect plays out, from the fossil fuel emissions stage to the end result of trapping heat in the atmosphere!

We had our third workshop with the Sixth Street Community Center last week! We gave an interactive lesson on the consequences of global warming and what the kids and their families can do to help. They had fun being creative and filling out their very own “climate superhero” sheets, each with a different environmentally friendly power. Our worksheets had an at-home action plan to help them find ways to implement their newfound knowledge in their daily lives! Feel free to apply it to your own household.

Our fourth Sixth Street Workshop was held! We first gave a lesson about different things young kids, or anyone, can do to use less waste and save energy. Afterwards, we started our “Tree Activity” where the kids drew and wrote about actions they could take to incorporate into their daily lives about being more aware of our environment. With reused paper, we made a tree and put leaves on it with our ideas of what saving energy looks like. Whether that be turning off the lights when leaving a room to using less water unnecessarily. We had so much fun seeing what everyone wrote.

Another great day in Alphabet City! We visited Sixth Street Community Center and gave a lesson on eco-friendly transportation, which the kids already knew lots about! They had fun calling out all the different ways they get around the city, including public transport, like the bus and the train, cars, and scootering. Then they carefully identified the effects that these different modes of transport have on the environment, comparing the combustion involved in motorized vehicles versus walking, for example. After our meeting, the kids each got creative creating their own eco-friendly mode of transportation. Some great ones were a van with water that swirls around for energy and a solar powered jet pack! All in all, it was a great day and we learned a lot about how our daily habits impact the environment.

We came back to Sixth Street to teach fifteen students all about the fashion industry!! We delivered a presentation about its relation to the climate crisis, as well as the differences between fast fashion and “future forward” fashion. We brought up examples like water consumption, pollution, waste and workers rights to show them why certain types of clothing are harmful for people and the planet. Then, we ended with definitions of slow fashion and second hand fashion, inspiring them to shop and consume more sustainably as they grow older! Following the presentation, we did an activity where the kids cut up old clothing and glued the scraps onto silhouettes to teach them the value of reusing fabric and clothes.

We taught students at Sixth Street all about the Agriculture Industry. We discussed its three main components – the environment, animals and people, and explained how the industry and its scale damages our environment. After giving the students background on the greenhouse effect, we discussed that the industry generates 25% of yearly greenhouse gas emissions – 45% of which come from meat and dairy production. We discussed eating consciously and understanding where your food comes from and how it is processed! After the presentation, the kids designed and drew their own eco-friendly “green farms” complete with innovations to make them more sustainable!

On Friday, we visited the Association to Benefit Children in East Harlem. We discussed the Greenhouse Effect, the causes and effects of the Climate Crisis, and the steps we can all collectively take to live more sustainably! At the end we played a game of jeopardy to test the kids’ knowledge, and then sent them home with a climate action plan encompassing small steps they can take in their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint. The Association to Benefit Children is a Nonprofit organization that provides educational support and crucial youth development services to at-risk children and families in Northern Manhattan.

We visited the Association to Benefit Children in East Harlem to teach kids aged seven to nine about greenhouse gases and the Greenhouse effect. We then had them design their own climate action plans and discuss how they could have tangible impacts on their own immediate communities. The Association to Benefit Children is a Nonprofit organization that provides educational support and crucial youth development services to at-risk children and families in Northern Manhattan.

4th Grade Green Team: April 19th, 2024
After lots of planning we did our first guest talk for the Green Team at ps234! We walked them through the basics of global warming in a comprehensive slideshow, and they filled out their very own “climate superhero” sheets, each with a different environmentally friendly power. Our worksheets had an at-home action plan to help them find ways to implement their newfound knowledge in their daily lives! Feel free to apply it to your own household. The kids had a great time!

5th Grade Green Team: May 21, 2025
On Wednesday, we visited ps234 to introduce 21 5th graders to an environmentally conscious way to discard their food waste – COMPOSTING!! We gave an informative presentation on the components of composting and how it reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions. This was followed by an interactive workshop where the students split into groups and layered greens and browns to create their very own compost!!

5th Grade Green Team: May 20th, 2025
We hosted another workshop at ps234 where we did a deep dive into Climate Case Studies with the Fifth Grade Green Team! The Fifth Graders were in the middle of a social justice unit in school, so we started by teaching them all about why we founded LES and how they can start something similar in their own communities! We discussed fundraising, showed them pictures of our past workshops, and talked about our future goals for the organization. For the Climate Case Studies, we zoomed in on parts of the world like South Sudan, Somalia and Madagascar that have been impacted by droughts, flooding, food scarcity and destroyed infrastructure. We helped them understand the scale of the crises these countries are facing, and why it’s so important to stay educated.
